Revitalization of Merdeka Square Medan
/ Lapangan Merdeka, Medan, North Sumatera
/ 2022
/ Under Construction
The historic urban square of Lapangan Merdeka, or Merdeka Square, has been the epicenter of Medan’s development as a modern city since the late 19th century. As a critical part of Medan’s heritage, it is inseparably linked to Kesawan, the city’s historic district, which served as the nucleus of the city’s colonial and commercial activities. For decades, however, Lapangan Merdeka experienced significant neglect and over-commercialization, leading to a loss of its original character and historical significance. This long period of decline is now being addressed through a comprehensive revitalization project, which combines conservation strategies with carefully planned in-fill development to restore the square’s legacy and public utility.
The revitalization of Merdeka Square focuses on reinstating its original function as a green, open public space while integrating more greenery to enhance its environmental and aesthetic appeal. This transformation is not just about physical improvements but also about re-establishing its role as a space of historical and cultural significance. To emphasize its heritage, information boards will be installed to educate visitors on the square’s past, and efforts will be made to retain the old, historic trees, which have stood as living witnesses to Medan’s evolution. These trees are not only an environmental asset but also a symbolic connection to the city’s colonial era, adding layers of meaning to the revitalized space.
A key feature of the revitalization is the construction of an iconic membrane roof that will serve as a new architectural landmark for Medan. The design of the roof is inspired by the shape of the Deli tobacco leaf, a symbol deeply rooted in the region's history. Deli tobacco was once one of the most important commodities of Medan, driving its economy and shaping the city’s identity. The leaf-shaped roof is therefore a nod to this legacy, merging historical reference with contemporary design. This new structure will not only offer shade and shelter but will also provide a striking visual statement that enhances the city’s skyline and solidifies the square’s importance in the urban fabric.
In addition to its visual and environmental improvements, the revitalization project also addresses the practical needs of a growing urban population. Two levels of underground parking will be constructed beneath the square, reducing surface-level parking congestion and making the space more pedestrian-friendly. This addition also supports the square's role as a transit hub, facilitating easier access for visitors and residents.
Complementing these infrastructural improvements are new cultural facilities that will be integrated into the revitalized Merdeka Square. These include a city museum, a city planning gallery, and an art gallery. The museum will serve as a repository of Medan’s rich history, offering residents and tourists alike a deeper understanding of the city’s past. The city planning gallery will provide insights into the evolution of Medan’s urban landscape, connecting the past with contemporary development trends and future aspirations. The art gallery will offer a space for the celebration of Medan’s creative talent and cultural diversity, further enriching the public’s experience of the square.
Together, these elements ensure that the revitalized Lapangan Merdeka is not just a green space, but a multifaceted public venue that honors Medan’s historical legacy, meets the practical needs of modern urban life, and fosters social and cultural engagement. This transformation re-establishes Merdeka Square as the heart of Medan, blending its colonial past with contemporary innovations to create a space that is both functional and symbolic for the city’s future.
