Revitalization of Merdeka Square Medan

The historic urban square of Lapangan Merdeka or Merdeka Square is ground zero of Medan’s development as a modern city since the last quarter of 19th century. It is inseparable part of Medan’s historic center called Kesawan. After decades of negligence and over-commercialization, through conservation approach and sensitive in-fill development, Merdeka Square is undergoing a major transformation. In addition to returning its main function as a green public space with more greenery, the revitalization also will strengthen the interpretation and representation of the square’s heritage values through information boards and retaining of the old trees. An iconic membrane roof whose design is a transformation of the shape of a Deli tobacco’s leaf becomes a new landmark for the city centre. Underground parking are located at two levels of basement floors. Adjacent to it are public cultural facilities of city museum, city planning gallery and art gallery.
