Soehardi Hartono completed the international course on Improving Management Effectiveness of World Heritage Properties

HDS principal, Soehardi Hartono, has successfully completed the international course on "Improving Management Effectiveness of World Heritage Properties." Hosted by the National Cultural Heritage Administration of the People's Republic of China (NCHA) and the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), this course was organized in collaboration with the China Academy of Cultural Heritage (CACH) and the ICCROM-IUCN World Heritage Leadership Programme. It took place from November 5 to 16, 2023, at the Ming Tombs, part of the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties World Heritage site in Beijing, China.


The program provided participants with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the World Heritage context of China, learning firsthand from the management practices of Chinese World Heritage properties. The course was structured around forthcoming World Heritage resource manuals and the "Enhancing Our Heritage Toolkit 2.0," offering practical and theoretical insights into improving management effectiveness.


Key topics covered in the course included:

  • Fundamentals of World Heritage management

  • The World Heritage management system

  • The "Heritage-Place Approach"

  • Conducting management effectiveness assessments using the "Enhancing Our Heritage 2.0" toolkit

  • World Heritage monitoring strategies

  • Implementation of the World Heritage Convention within the context of China
