HDS Principal, Soehardi Hartono successfully completed the "Old Cities, New Challenges 2021" course, an intensive program focused on urban conservation planning in Southeast Asia. This course, organized by the Getty Conservation Institute and ThinkCity Institute, provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved in conserving historical urban environments amidst rapid urbanization and modern development pressures. It emphasized the importance of balancing heritage preservation with sustainable urban growth, equipping professionals with the tools to address contemporary challenges in protecting Southeast Asia’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.


The program included modules on best practices in urban conservation, case studies of successful heritage conservation projects in the region, and interactive workshops where participants engaged in real-world problem-solving exercises. By focusing on the unique context of Southeast Asia, the course explored the socio-economic, political, and environmental factors influencing urban conservation in the region, offering innovative approaches to integrating heritage into the broader framework of urban planning.
