Sustainable Heritage Management: Designing Public-private Partnerships

Participation in the masterclass of Sustainable Heritage Management on Designing Public-private Partnership in Penang

Our principal at HDS, Soehardi Hartono, successfully completed the Sustainable Heritage Management masterclass on "Designing Public-Private Partnerships" in November-December 2022, held in Penang. This masterclass, organized by UNESCO Bangkok in collaboration with ThinkCity Institute, was designed to provide advanced training in the development and management of public-private partnerships (PPPs) for heritage conservation.

Focusing on innovative strategies to engage both public and private sectors in heritage preservation, the course explored best practices for fostering collaboration, securing funding, and ensuring long-term sustainability for heritage projects. It emphasized the role of PPPs as a critical mechanism for bridging the gap between public resources and private investment, especially in the context of heritage sites that require sensitive restoration and adaptive reuse.

Participants were exposed to real-world case studies and engaged in hands-on workshops to develop actionable plans for forming successful partnerships. The masterclass highlighted how public institutions, private businesses, and local communities can work together to not only preserve cultural heritage but also stimulate economic growth through sustainable tourism, revitalization of historic areas, and other heritage-led development initiatives.

By completing this program, he has enhanced his expertise in sustainable heritage management, particularly in leveraging public-private collaborations to ensure that heritage sites are not only protected but also contribute to the broader economic and social fabric of their communities. His participation underscores his dedication to implementing innovative conservation models that balance preservation with modern development needs.
